I'm afraid I've barely looked at this app. Unlike other apps it seems really focused on being a course - it's about teaching you, rather than getting you to do something pretty and save the picture. It offers enough of a 'taste' of each part of the app that I have a fairly good idea about what's on offer. The exercises and techniques are described with a lot of technical detail, and I like that it seems to have been developed with the Apple Pencil in mind. It's the cleanest UI I've seen so far, and while it only offers one hand (cursive script) it seems to have a lot there. (Especially NZ$6.49/month - that's quite a lot!) Some of the features are offered for free, the rest is under a subscription, which isn't terribly appealing - I'd rather pay a one-off amount than commit to a monthly payment.

Most damningly, several parts of it don't seem to work - there's a Hints/Tips and a Share label, neither of which do anything. It also has issues with picking up the side of my hand as I wrote - so below the letters are a bunch of little dashes and marks from my finger. I found it a bit tricky to start with - the default 'pen' is too thick for the first guides you follow, and it took me some experimenting to figure which pen I should use. It also offers two pages of lined guides, some 'freehand' options (different textured backgrounds), and colouring pages.

It's pretty basic - it has a generic "here's how to calligraphy" guide and some pages available where you can trace Italic or Gothic alphabets. I think this app is designed by a company to go with pens that they sell - and from what I can tell, it hasn't been updated at all since it was created six years ago. I'd love to hear how other people have found these apps, if there's any I've missed, and also if any of the paid apps are worth shelling out for. I'm in NZ, and it's possible that there's other good apps which just aren't available in the app store for my country.

  • I'm trying out only the free apps (or the ones which let you try the basic features for free).
  • As far as I can see, everyone here uses Procreate - which looks like a good app, but it's also expensive when this is the only thing I'd want it for! I couldn't see much discussion on this sub about these kinds of apps so I hope it might be useful if I posted about what I found. I've got a new iPad and a new Apple Pencil, and one of the things I wanted to try was using the iPad for calligraphy - I think that my best efforts will still be using pen and paper, but I thought that it could be a great tool to help with consistency and refine my strokes, as well as helping me master the Pencil.
